VOLUNTEER CLUB POSITIONS

Like all clubs, the Vancouver Shogi Club relies upon the time and dedication of its volunteers. Getting involved is a lot of fun, and is a good way of meeting people and giving back to the community.

President Responsible for the overall operations of the club. Filled
Festival Director Organizes the club’s involvement in various festivals, including the Powell Street Festival (August), the Sakura Days Japan Fair (April), and the Summer Festival at SFU (June). Vacant
Tournament Director Organizes tournaments, including an annual in-person Vancouver Open Shogi Championship. Also acts on behalf of the club to support larger tournaments, such as the annual online Canadian Shogi Championship; and the future in-person Cascadian Shogi Championship. This role may eventually involve formally inviting professional shogi players from Japan to act as ambassadors at tournaments here in Vancouver. Vacant
Sponsorship Director Responsible for generating sponsorship revenue for the club. This will involve applying for grants from local and national cultural organization, as well as soliciting commercial sponsorships from local companies. All generate revenue will be used for club activities. Vacant
Graphic Design Director Creates graphics and posters used to promote club events. Designs event poster/flyer templates and updates them prior to each event. Designs a club brochure. Designs a poster used for tournaments and other special events. Responsible for club branding and identity, including creaitng graphics for website and social media accounts. Vacant
Moii Cafe Events Host Responsible for acting as the club host at all Nikkei Centre events (second Saturday of most months). This position involves arriving prior to the event start time, setting up the shogi boards, collecting payment from members, gathering up the shogi boards after the event, and taking the shogi boards home until the next Moii Cafe event. Ideally this position would also include putting up club posters around the Nikkei Centre area (such as Murata-WA Lifestyle Store, etc.). Vacant
International Village Events Host Responsible for acting as the club host at all International Village events (first Friday of most months). This position involves arriving prior to the event start time, setting up the shogi boards, and gathering up the shogi boards after the event. Ideally this position would also include putting up club posters around the International Village area. Filled
UBC Events Host Responsible for organizing occasional events at the University of British Columbia. The position may involve booking a room on the UBC campus for events solely organized by the club, or organizing joint events with UBC organizations (such as other board game clubs or relevant cultural clubs). The role involves collecting the shogi boards from the Moii Cafe Events Coordinator, arriving prior to the event start time, setting up the shogi boards, possibly collecting payment from members, putting away the shogi boards after the event, and returning the shogi boards to the Moii Cafe Event Coordinator (or bringing them to the next Moii Cafe event). Ideally this position would also include putting up club posters around the UBC campus (Rits House, Asian Centre, International House, Buchanan buildings, Student Union Building, etc). Filled
SFU Events Host Responsible for organizing occasional events at Simon Fraser University. The position may involve booking a room on the SFU campus for events solely organized by the club, or organizing joint events with UBC organizations (such as other board game clubs or relevant cultural clubs). The role involves collecting the shogi boards from the Moii Cafe Events Coordinator, arriving prior to the event start time, setting up the shogi boards, possibly collecting payment from members, putting away the shogi boards after the event, and returning the shogi boards to the Moii Cafe Event Coordinator (or bringing them to the next Moii Cafe event). Ideally this position would also include putting up club posters around the SFU campus. Filled
English Marketing Coordinator Submits information about club events to English-language websites, newspapers, and magazines on a regular basis. Could also be responsible for maintaining English-language social media accounts. Also of interest would be the ability to write news releases about tournaments and to submit these to news media outlets. Responds to requests for additional information from English-language news media. Vacant
Japanese Marketing Coordinator Submits information about club events to Japanese-language websites, newspapers, and magazines on a regular basis. Could also be responsible for maintaining Japanese-language social media accounts. Also of interest would be the ability to write news releases in Japanese (or translate English news releases into Japanese) about tournaments and to submit these to Japanese-language news media outlets. Responds to requests for additional information from Japanese-language news media. Vacant
Chinese Marketing Coordinator Submits information about club events to Chinese-language websites, newspapers, and magazines on a regular basis. The position includes maintaining Chinese-language social media accounts (such as Weibo). Also of interest would be the ability to write news releases in Chinese (or translate English news releases into Chinese) about tournaments and to submit these to Chinese-language news media outlets. Responds to requests for additional information from Chinese-language news media. Vacant
Korean Marketing Coordinator Submits information about club events to Korean-language websites, newspapers, and magazines on a regular basis. Could also be responsible for maintaining Japanese-language social media accounts. Also of interest would be the ability to write news releases in Korean (or translate English news releases into Korean) about tournaments and to submit these to Korean-language news media outlets. Russian Marketing Coordinator Submits information about club events to Russian-language websites, newspapers, and magazines on a regular basis. Could also be responsible for maintaining Russian-language social media accounts. Richmond Events Host Responsible for organizing one event each year in Richmond. The position may involve booking a space in Richmond for events solely organized by the club, or organizing joint events with other organizations (such as other board game clubs or relevant cultural clubs). The role involves collecting the shogi boards from the Moii Cafe Events Coordinator, arriving prior to the event start time, setting up the shogi boards, possibly collecting payment from attendees, putting away the shogi boards after the event, and returning the shogi boards to the Moii Cafe Event Coordinator (or bringing them to the next Moii Cafe event). Ideally this position would also include putting up club posters around Richmond prior to the event. Vacant
New Westminster Events Host Responsible for organizing one event each year in New Westminster. Surrey Events Coordinator Responsible for organizing one event each year in Surrey. The position may involve booking a space in Surrey for events solely organized by the club, or organizing joint events with other organizations (such as other board game clubs or relevant cultural clubs). The role involves collecting the shogi boards from the Moii Cafe Events Coordinator, arriving prior to the event start time, setting up the shogi boards, possibly collecting payment from attendees, putting away the shogi boards after the event, and returning the shogi boards to the Moii Cafe Event Coordinator (or bringing them to the next Moii Cafe event). Ideally this position would also include putting up club posters around Surrey prior to the event. Vacant
North Shore Events Host Responsible for organizing one event each year in North Vancouver and/or West Vancouver. The position may involve booking a space on the North Shore for events solely organized by the club, or organizing joint events with other organizations (such as other board game clubs or relevant cultural clubs). The role involves collecting the shogi boards from the Moii Cafe Events Coordinator, arriving prior to the event start time, setting up the shogi boards, possibly collecting payment from members, putting away the shogi boards after the event, and returning the shogi boards to the Moii Cafe Event Coordinator (or bringing them to the next Moii Cafe event). Ideally this position would also include putting up club posters around the North Shore prior to the event. Vacant
Tri-Cities Events Host Responsible for organizing one event each year in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and/or Port Moody. The position may involve booking a space in the Tri-Cities area for events solely organized by the club, or organizing joint events with other organizations (such as other board game clubs or relevant cultural clubs). The role involves collecting the shogi boards from the Moii Cafe Events Coordinator, arriving prior to the event start time, setting up the shogi boards, possibly collecting payment from attendees, putting away the shogi boards after the event, and returning the shogi boards to the Moii Cafe Event Coordinator (or bringing them to the next Moii Cafe event). Ideally this position would also include putting up club posters around the Tri-Cities prior to the event. Vacant
Poster Distribution Putting club event posters/flyers up in public places, to increase the club’s visibility. Vacant
