What is Shogi?

Shogi is Japan’s version of chess. Shogi is unique among national chess variants in that captured pieces can be brought back into play under the captor’s control – the “drop rule”.  The board size in shogi (9×9 squares) is larger than in Western chess (8×8), some of the pieces are different (e.g. gold generals, silver generals, etc.), and most of the pieces can be promoted to become stronger (e.g. a rook becomes a dragon king).
